Security Guard Equipment Checklist

A well-trained guard is only as effective as the equipment they carry. Missing a torch on a night patrol or a working radio during an emergency can turn a small incident into a serious one. Use this checklist to make sure every post is properly equipped.
Uniform and identification
- Complete, clean uniform with company insignia
- Beret or cap
- Visible name plate or ID card
- Duty belt
- Comfortable, slip-resistant boots or shoes
Communication
- Two-way radio with charged spare battery
- Mobile phone with supervisor, client and emergency numbers saved
- Posted list of emergency contacts: police (15), Rescue 1122, fire brigade and hospital
Patrol and detection
- High-power torch (and spare batteries)
- Whistle
- Hand-held metal detector where screening is required
- Patrol checkpoint system or logbook
Records and documentation
- Visitor register
- Vehicle register
- Key register
- Daily occurrence book
- Copy of the site’s post orders
Safety and first aid
- Basic first-aid kit
- Fire extinguisher at the post, with the guard trained to use it
- Reflective vest for gate and traffic duty
- Gloves for vehicle checks and night work
- Raincoat and winter jacket in season
Armed posts
Where armed guards are deployed, weapons must be licensed and carried in line with applicable laws, with the guard trained and authorised to carry them. Weapons, licences and ammunition should be checked and recorded at every shift change.
Supervisor checks
Supervisors should inspect equipment during routine visits and record any missing or damaged items. A short monthly audit keeps every post ready for the unexpected.
